As a certified casualty nurse currently working in one of the foremost
tertiary health institutions in the country. And having also been
privileged to scrub for countless orthopedic surgeries while working
in the main theaters of another reputable health facility.
You can imagine the degree of shock and disbelief that hit me when I had
the opportunity to visit the “den” of a traditional bone setter. It was like
being punched square in the face by a really furious version of Batista.
This guy believes he knows it all and that no one else does it better when it
comes down to treating broken bones and broken vertebrae columns.
There was this poor little girl that has been in his custody for over
3 weeks receiving “TREATMENT“ for a femoral fracture. Customarily
in fracture management, the bones are immobilized either with ‘plaster
of Paris’ in simple cases of closed fractures. Or with the use of
traction’s in more complex scenarios and the bones given time to unite.
Then patient rehabilitation then follows. This is a simple explanation of
Never! I repeat never! Do you massage a fractured limb twice a
day – morning and night – as a fracture management intervention. “For the
love of all things good. Besides being wrong and injurious on so many levels, it should pass for sin”.
What happened to “good old” minimizing movement in a fractured
limb so as to prevent further damage to underlying tissues and blood
This intervention was wrong on a thousand levels among other
malpractices that was going on that day in the so called “bone healers”
Well, I concluded that unless something is done urgently about transferring her to a genuine establishment to get
expert care. She may never be able to walk with that leg properly again. Except certain calculated measures are
put in place to forestall this ugly trend – quackery. The practice will continue. Painful still is the fact that a tonne of
poor people in Nigeria never see the danger in patronizing such murdering charlatans.
Poor and ignorant Nigerians even believe these quacks are their saviors. The savior that rescues them from the
orthodox health centers and their ” professional attendants ” – referring to nurses and doctors e.t.c. Who they feel
are waiting at the gates of hospitals with outrageous medical bills that can chew off ones arm. This is not always
It so happens a lot that after people have spent a fortune at these quack centers with negative outcomes. They
ultimately come to their senses and advice themselves. You see them bringing the non-remediable case to the
tertiary institution. Now wanting the physician to perform magic. It’s funny really. And some get very disappointed
and even irate when the doctor isn’t able to reverse the damage already done in so short a time.
The ideal thing to do is to always seek the opinion of a professional. The solution may not be as complicated or
costly as you think. Plus, you stand to benefit all ways because you got the best in the industry at your service.
